GI SCORING RATIONALE
Historically significant — the first team from sub-Saharan Africa to reach the World Cup. But their performance has often overshadowed their achievement.
Qualified as African champions, but lost all three group games, conceding 14 and scoring none. Still, getting there was no small feat.
Widely remembered — not always kindly. The “free kick incident” became infamous. But also opened the door for African teams to demand better support and representation.
Mwepu Ilunga charging out of the wall is still shown today. It's funny on the surface, but underpinned by real despair.
There was promise — many players were talented. But the off-field circumstances crushed their spark. A tale of mismanagement and fear, not freedom.
